Roof Leak Repair in Wichita
A drip from the ceiling or a stain that keeps growing? We connect you with one independent local roofer who can find and fix the source.
Most roof leaks start at a weak point, not in the middle of a healthy field of shingles: flashing around chimneys and walls, vent pipe boots, valleys, skylights, or damaged shingles from hail or wind. A roofer finds the source by tracing the water path from the stain upward, then repairs that spot. Until then, your job is to limit damage inside safely.
What should you do when the roof starts leaking?
- Catch the water. Put buckets or towels under the drip and move furniture and electronics away.
- Watch the ceiling. If drywall is bulging with water, keep people and pets out of the room. Turn off power to light fixtures in the wet area at the breaker if you can reach it from a dry spot.
- Don't go on the roof in a storm, and don't climb on a wet, icy, or damaged roof at all.
- Look in the attic with a flashlight, if it's safe to walk on the framing, to see where water is entering.
- Take photos of the stain, the drip, and anything in the attic.
Where do roof leaks usually come from?
- Pipe boots: the rubber collar around plumbing vents cracks in the sun and lets water run down the pipe.
- Chimney and wall flashing: step flashing and counter-flashing pull loose or rust, and caulk dries out.
- Valleys: where two slopes meet, water concentrates and debris collects.
- Skylights: worn seals or poor flashing around the frame.
- Hail or wind damage: cracked, bruised, or missing shingles. See hail damage and wind damage.
- Gutters: clogged or sagging gutters can push water back under the roof edge.
- Nail pops: nails that back out over time punch small holes in the shingle above.
Could it be an ice dam?
Wichita winters bring snow, ice storms, and repeated thaw cycles. When heat from the house melts snow on the upper roof, the water runs down and turns back to ice at the colder eaves, forming a ridge of ice. Water then backs up under the shingles and leaks into walls and ceilings near the outside edge. Ice dams usually point to attic insulation and ventilation problems. Don't chip ice off the roof yourself; it's dangerous and damages shingles. Ask a roofer about ventilation, insulation, and ice and water barrier at the eaves.
Is it really the roof?
Not every ceiling stain is a roof leak. AC condensate lines in the attic, bathroom exhaust fans that vent into the attic, plumbing, and condensation from poor ventilation can all leave stains. If a stain shows up on a dry, sunny day, or only when the AC runs, mention it. A roofer can rule the roof in or out.
How is a leak repaired?
Common repairs include replacing a pipe boot, re-flashing a chimney, resealing or replacing a skylight, replacing damaged shingles, reworking a valley, or fixing gutters and drip edge. If the decking under the leak is rotted, that section is cut out and replaced. A good roofer shows you photos of what they found and what they fixed.
When does a leak mean something bigger?
Multiple leaks, leaks that come back after repairs, widespread granule loss, or soft decking can mean the roof is near the end of its life. See repair vs. replacement. If a storm caused the leak, ask your insurer whether to file a claim. See roof insurance claims.
What about mold and wet insulation?
Wet insulation loses its effectiveness and can hold moisture against wood. Ask the roofer to check the attic after the repair. If drywall or insulation stayed wet for days, you may need to remove and replace it so the area can dry.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my roof only leak in heavy wind-driven rain?
Wind can push water sideways under flashing, through vents, or under lifted shingles that shed normal rain fine. That points to flashing or edge problems a roofer can trace.
Can I use roofing tar or caulk as a fix?
As a short-term patch from a safe spot, sealant may slow a leak, but it rarely lasts and can make the real problem harder to find. Have a roofer make the permanent repair.
Does homeowners insurance cover a roof leak?
It depends on the cause. Sudden storm damage is often treated differently from wear and tear or slow leaks. Ask your insurer.
How do I stop ice dams?
The long-term fix is usually better attic insulation and ventilation so the roof deck stays cold. Ice and water barrier at the eaves helps limit leaks. Avoid chopping ice off the roof.
